Section 4
A taste of the future

While in Galilee, Jesus, his mother and some younger relatives were at a wedding celebration in the town of Cana.

The party reached a point where the wine ran out and so his mother said to Jesus, "There is no wine left."

"Woman, what does this have to do with me?" Jesus replied. "My time hasn't yet come." [tf.1]

But his mother told the servants, "Do whatever he says."

As it happened, there were six stone jars on hand that could each hold 20 to 30 gallons of liquid. These were normally used, in accordance with Jewish custom, for ceremonial washings.

"Fill those pots with water," Jesus told the servants.

They did so, filling them to the brim.

"Now draw some out and take it to the man in charge of the party," he said.

So the servants took a cup of it to the man in charge.

He took a sip, and immediately called the groom over, saying, "Everyone always puts out the good wine first, and then, once people have had plenty to drink, the inferior wine is offered. But you have kept the good wine until now!"

The man in charge did not know what had happened, though the servants knew.

After this, Jesus, his mother and his brothers  [tf.2]  went to another Galilean town, Capernaum, which is on Lake Galilee.  [tf.3]

They only stayed there a little while.
